Where it came from
Spicy is a front card from the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2022. These cards were designed to represent the theme of the deck inside each booster pack, serving as a visual indicator of the pack's contents. Unlike standard game cards, these front cards are purely functional identifiers used to assist players in identifying the thematic composition of the Jumpstart packs before opening them.
The artwork for the Spicy theme was created by artist Ekaterina Burmak, who employed a vibrant, heat-infused aesthetic to convey the chaotic and aggressive playstyle associated with the theme. The design emphasizes the impulsive nature of red-aligned mechanics within the game. It was received by the player base as a whimsical addition to the Jumpstart experience, contributing to the set's goal of facilitating quick, randomized deck construction for social play.
