Where it came from
Dark Confidant was originally printed in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds set as an homage to Bob Maher, the winner of the 2003 Magic Invitational. The design allows players to draw cards at the cost of life, a high-risk, high-reward mechanic that reflects Maher's aggressive and efficient style of play. Its inclusion in the 2020 Double Masters set marked a return to the card's status as a staple of competitive play across multiple formats, maintaining its place as one of the most iconic creatures in the game's history.
The artwork for this specific printing was created by Scott M. Fischer. Fischer’s illustration captures the dark, secretive nature of the card, depicting the figure as a sinister advisor whispering into the ear of a spellcaster. Upon its release, the card was widely praised for both its strategic depth and its haunting aesthetic, cementing it as a foundational card for black-aligned decks that prioritize resource management and tempo.
