Where it came from
The Spider token, identified as card number 14 in the Modern Horizons Token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This set was uniquely designed to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering, bypassing the standard Standard-legal rotation. As an ancillary product, the set leaned heavily into fan-favorite mechanics and creature types, necessitating the inclusion of specific tokens to represent summoned entities on the battlefield.
The art for this token was commissioned to capture the atmospheric, slightly unsettling nature of the creature, consistent with the set's high-fantasy aesthetic. It serves as a functional game piece for cards like 'Spider Spawning' or other effects that create a 1/2 green Spider creature token with reach. The design reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to providing visually distinct and thematic assets that enhance the physical tabletop experience for players.
