Where it came from
The Bird token with collector number 3 was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast introduced this set as a direct-to-modern expansion, designed to introduce new cards and tokens that were intended to influence the power level and deck-building landscape of the Modern format rather than passing through the standard rotation.
This specific token represents the 1/1 flying creature created by various spells and abilities within the set, such as Soulherder or Changeling Outcast. The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often features high-fantasy atmospheric lighting. The design was received as a functional necessity for players, fitting into the cohesive aesthetic of the Modern Horizons art direction which prioritized thematic consistency across the game's evolving mechanical identity.
