Where it came from
The Spider token, bearing the collector number 6, was released as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in May 2008. These tokens are not playable cards in a deck but serve as physical representations of creature types created by spells or abilities—in this case, triggered by cards like Epic Proportions or similar effects within the set's unique, hybrid-mana-heavy mechanics.
The artwork for this token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and gritty fantasy style. Staples utilized a dark, swamp-like aesthetic to align with the gothic, eerie tone of the Shadowmoor plane, which was designed to contrast with the high-fantasy setting of the preceding Lorwyn set. The piece was well-received for its ominous portrayal of the creature, fitting perfectly into the set’s focus on darker, more unsettling imagery.
