Where it came from
The Spider token from the Modern Masters 2017 set was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of a curated collection designed to support the limited-environment format of the set. Token cards in this release served as functional game pieces for cards that create creature tokens, such as Arachnus Spinner or Penumbra Spider, ensuring that players had a consistent visual reference during gameplay.
The artwork for this particular token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time illustrator for the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Known for his atmospheric and detailed style, Staples sought to depict the arachnid with a menacing, visceral quality that fit the dark, gritty aesthetic prevalent in the Modern Masters series. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player community for its clean layout and the evocative nature of the illustration, quickly becoming a staple in the personal collections of players who favored green-aligned graveyard and reach-based strategies.
