Beast

The Beast token, numbered 10 in the Modern Masters 2017 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in March 2017 to accompany the third entry in the Modern Masters reprint series. These tokens were included in booster packs to represent creatures summoned by various spells in the set, such as Baloth Cage Trap or Beast Within, providing a physical marker for gameplay state management. The set was designed to curate powerful staples for the Modern format, and the inclusion of updated token art served to maintain the aesthetic consistency of the release.

The artwork for this particular Beast token was illustrated by Deruchenko Alexander. The design leans into a rugged, monstrous aesthetic consistent with the creature type's identity in Magic: The Gathering, emphasizing a primitive, imposing presence. As part of a reprint-heavy set, the token's visual design was intended to be functional and evocative, balancing the practical necessity of a battlefield token with the high-quality production standards characteristic of the Modern Masters series.
