Where it came from
Squidnapper was released as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed at MagicFest events. These cards were designed as an internal experiment by Wizards of the Coast to explore unconventional mechanics and design spaces that would not typically appear in standard, tournament-legal expansion sets. The card features a distinct 'playtest' aesthetic, utilizing a stark, minimalist card frame that exposes the developmental nature of the game’s design process.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who embraced the playful and slightly surreal tone intended for this series. As a design exercise, Squidnapper focuses on a blue-aligned creature effect that mimics the classic 'stealing' or creature-manipulation tropes found throughout the history of Magic: The Gathering. While not legal for sanctioned play, the card was well-received by the player base as a whimsical look into the R&D department's brainstorming sessions, serving as a rare artifact of the game's iterative development cycle.
