Where it came from
The Squid token was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to support specific cards from the set, most notably Coastal Breach and other effects that generate creature tokens. As a supplemental set designed for the multiplayer Commander format, these tokens were included in preconstructed decks to provide players with physical representations of temporary creatures created during gameplay.
The design of the token follows the established aesthetic for Magic creature tokens, emphasizing a clear, functional visual identity while maintaining the high artistic standards of the broader card game. While the token is not credited to a single named illustrator in the same manner as a rare card, it reflects the cohesive, imaginative style of the Wizards of the Coast art department. The artwork was well-received by the player base for its consistency and utility in tracking board states during complex multiplayer matches.
