Provenance

Where it came from

The Squid Fire Knight sticker, identified as collector number 27, was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to lean into a whimsical, retro-futuristic carnival aesthetic, marking the fourth 'Un-' set which traditionally focuses on humor and mechanics that exist outside standard tournament play regulations.

The design of the Squid Fire Knight reflects the set's space-circus theme, featuring an anthropomorphic cephalopod brandishing a fiery blade. As a component of the sticker sheet mechanic, the item was intended to introduce a new layer of temporary modification to gameplay, challenging traditional card interactions. The reception was mixed, as the complexity of tracking stickers on physical cards sparked debate among long-time players regarding the balance of fun versus administrative overhead.
