Where it came from
Squirrel Farm was released in 2020 as part of Unsanctioned, a standalone boxed set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed as a silver-bordered product, which exists outside the standard rules of the game to prioritize humor, unconventional mechanics, and a more lighthearted tone. The card specifically highlights the recurring tribal theme of Squirrels, a fan-favorite creature type that had long been a humorous staple in the game’s history before finally receiving more serious mechanical support in later sets.
The art and design for this card were crafted to lean into the whimsical nature of the Un-sets. By focusing on the absurd concept of a farm dedicated to squirrels, the illustrators and designers aimed to provide a playful experience that emphasizes player interaction and creative resource management. Upon its release, Unsanctioned was generally received as a successful entry for casual playgroups, serving as a well-contained experience that allowed players to engage with the game's more eccentric design space.
