Where it came from
Squirrel Mob was originally released in the 2001 set Odyssey, representing a moment where tribal synergy cards gained traction in Magic: The Gathering. The card was reprinted in the 2024 Bloomburrow Commander set, a release themed around an anthropomorphic woodland setting that lean into the game's long history of squirrel-themed mechanics. This specific version features updated frame treatments consistent with the Commander aesthetic while maintaining the original, whimsical design philosophy that balances numerical board presence with lighthearted creature types.
The art and design of the card play on the absurdity of squirrel-themed swarms, which have evolved from a niche joke in the game's early years to a functional and supported archetype. The inclusion of this card in the Bloomburrow release highlights the enduring appeal of these designs, which are frequently cited by players for their humorous flavor text and the strategic challenge of managing a rapidly growing number of tokens on the battlefield.
