Where it came from
Steelburr Champion is a card from the Bloomburrow Commander expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. The set draws inspiration from the anthropomorphic fantasy genre, focusing on a world of small woodland creatures navigating a perilous, high-fantasy landscape. This specific card reflects the set's core design philosophy of melding cozy, whimsical aesthetics with the strategic mechanics typical of the Magic: The Gathering Commander format.
The card features an illustration by the artist Wylie Beckert, known for her distinctive, ethereal, and often ink-heavy style that fits the rustic, storybook atmosphere of the Bloomburrow setting. As an equipment-themed card, it was designed to support the set's sub-themes of artifact synergy and creature-focused combat. Upon release, it was well-received by players who favor aggressive, tribal-leaning strategies, particularly those building decks centered around the set's resilient animal archetypes.
