Where it came from
Chatterfang, Squirrel General was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021, though this specific printing appears in the Bloomburrow Commander release. The character was designed to provide a cohesive commander for the long-requested squirrel-themed deck archetype, tapping into a nostalgic niche within Magic: The Gathering that had remained largely unsupported for decades. The card mechanics center on the generation of squirrel tokens, reflecting the creature's whimsical yet potent flavor profile.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Jason Felix, who utilized a vivid color palette to highlight the character's mischievous and authoritative nature. Upon its release, the card received significant acclaim from the player base for both its balanced yet powerful gameplay utility and its contribution to the expanded lore of the forest-dwelling factions. It has since become a definitive staple for players specializing in tribal-themed strategies.
