Where it came from
Stillness in Motion was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Khans of Tarkir. It was issued as part of the Dragonstorm promotional series, a specific subset of cards distributed through organized play events and tournament support kits. The card was designed to highlight the flavor and mechanics of the Abzan Houses, a faction centered on the themes of endurance and protection within the harsh, desert-inspired landscape of the Tarkir plane.
The illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, who utilized his signature bold style to convey the card's theme of temporary respite amidst a chaotic battlefield. His work on this piece was aimed at capturing the tension of the Dragonstorm narrative, where time and movement are often manipulated by the powerful warlords of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but conceptually interesting addition to the game, appreciated by players for both its strategic utility in multiplayer formats and its evocative visual representation of the set's core conflicts.
