Where it came from
Storrev, Devkarin Lich was introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The card depicts a prominent character from the Golgari Swarm on the plane of Ravnica, serving as a rare legendary creature that highlights the set's narrative focus on the conflict between the planeswalker Nicol Bolas and the combined forces of Ravnica's guilds. It was designed to synergize with graveyard-focused mechanics, reflecting the cyclical, decay-oriented nature of the Golgari faction.
The artwork for Storrev was illustrated by Dimitar Marinski, who opted for a macabre and imposing aesthetic to capture the lich's status as a leader within the Devkarin elves. The design reflects the visual language of the Golgari, utilizing deep earthy tones and necrotic imagery. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but thematic inclusion for players who appreciate graveyard recursion mechanics in the Commander format, fitting well into strategies that prioritize long-term attrition over explosive early-game plays.
