Where it came from
Storvald, Frost Giant Jarl was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set, an expansion that brought the lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card was designed to embody the archetypal Jarl of the frost giants, emphasizing themes of size, power, and the harsh environment of the North in D&D canon.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. In designing the piece, the artist focused on depicting the imposing scale and regal, yet brutal, nature of a frost giant leader. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, particularly appreciated by players looking for a giant-themed commander that rewards an aggressive board state.
