Where it came from
Sunfall was introduced as a pivotal card in the 2023 expansion March of the Machine, a set designed to conclude the multi-year Phyrexian arc of Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the desperate, cataclysmic efforts of the Multiverse to excise the Phyrexian invasion, serving as a powerful board wipe mechanic that exile-clears the battlefield while leaving behind a token scaled to the power of the removed threats.
The art was commissioned for the promotional release of the set, featuring a stark and sweeping aesthetic that emphasizes the theme of total celestial renewal. While the specific illustrator sought to balance the inherent devastation of the spell with the clinical precision of the game's mechanics, the card was widely received by players as a staple for control-oriented decks, marking its place as a definitive board wipe in the modern format.
