Where it came from
Sunforger was originally introduced in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion, designed as an equipment artifact that allows players to search their library for red or white instant spells. The version from the Commander 2016 set, featuring illustration by Dan Dos Santos, retains the card's iconic mechanical identity while presenting it within the context of specialized multi-player deck building. The design reflects the Boros Legion's tactical ethos, focusing on battlefield utility and the direct manifestation of magical weaponry.
The art by Dan Dos Santos captures the weapon as a glowing, ethereal hammer infused with the volatile energies of its color alignment. Within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, Sunforger is highly regarded by players for its unique ability to tutor and cast spells directly from the deck, making it a staple in white-red commander decks. Its inclusion in Commander 2016 helped ensure that the card remained accessible to a new generation of players as the format exploded in popularity.
