Where it came from
Sunforger was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the game's lore, it represents the signature weapon of the Boros Legion, a guild defined by its dedication to law, order, and militant justice. The card was designed to embody this combat-oriented identity by allowing players to search their library for instant spells, effectively mimicking the Boros guild's ability to pull reinforcements or tactical responses directly from their ranks during the heat of battle.
The card's iconic illustration was crafted by artist Dan Dos Santos, who aimed to capture the artifact as a glowing, powerful hammer infused with arcane energy. The design emphasizes the weapon's utilitarian yet magical nature, appearing more as a conduit for light-based spells than a standard bludgeoning tool. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its unique utility, quickly becoming a staple in various deck-building formats where flexibility and spell-tutoring effects are highly valued.
