Where it came from
The Sunfrill Imitator is a card released in late 2023 as part of the 'Veloci-RAMP-tor' Commander deck for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan expansion. This set marked a return to the Mesoamerican-inspired plane of Ixalan, focusing heavily on tribal synergies involving dinosaurs, pirates, and merfolk. The card was designed to support the set's central theme of prehistoric power, serving as a mechanical showcase for the 'Enrage' keyword and the shapeshifting nature of the plane's unique fauna.
The artwork, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, depicts the creature in a state of predatory adaptation, fitting the aesthetic of a jungle-bound predator. Within the context of Magic: The Gathering, the card was received as a functional inclusion for dinosaur-themed decks, appreciated for its ability to mimic the traits of other creatures on the battlefield. It reflects the broader design philosophy of the Commander format, which emphasizes creature-heavy strategies and complex, board-state-altering interactions.
