Where it came from
The Suspend art card is part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a promotional set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This specific card showcases the full-bleed illustration from the 'Suspend' spell, a card originally featured in the Time Spiral expansion. The Art Series cards were designed to highlight the high-quality digital and traditional illustrations commissioned for the Modern Horizons 2 release, effectively turning functional game components into standalone pieces of gallery-style art.
The illustration was created by the artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the fantasy art community known for her detailed character work and evocative light usage. In this piece, she provides a new visual interpretation of the concept of time suspension, moving away from the abstract motifs of older sets toward a more grounded, ethereal aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors for its clean, frame-less presentation, which prioritizes the artistic composition over the text-heavy layout of standard trading cards.
