Carth the Lion // Carth the Lion

Carth the Lion was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a specialized subset of the main Magic: The Gathering expansion designed to showcase the high-fidelity illustrations of the set's creature cards. These cards were produced as collectible art cards, featuring the full-bleed artwork on the front and artist credits on the back, rather than functional gameplay mechanics. They were included as randomized pulls in set booster packs, catering to fans of the game’s visual world-building.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Titus Lunter, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Lunter’s design for Carth centers on the character's fierce, leonine visage and rugged, battle-worn aesthetic, aiming to evoke the grit of a veteran warrior. Upon its release, the Art Series was well-received by collectors who appreciated the opportunity to view the intricate details of the game's creature designs without the clutter of card text, making these pieces a staple for those curating personal galleries of Magic illustrations.
