Where it came from
Released in July 2015 as part of the Magic Origins expansion set, the Sword of the Animist was designed as an uncommon equipment card. This set served as the final core set for Magic: The Gathering, specifically crafted to tell the origin stories of five iconic Planeswalkers. The artifact represents the essence of exploration and growth, mechanics that were central to the set's green-aligned design philosophies.
The card was illustrated by Jung Park, a prolific artist known for his atmospheric and detailed landscape work within the game. Park's design emphasizes the card's theme of land manipulation, depicting a blade infused with natural energy that helps the wielder bridge the gap between their own power and the resources of the wild. Since its debut, it has remained a staple in casual and multiplayer formats, valued for its ability to ramp mana over the course of a game.
