Where it came from
Sword of the Animist was originally introduced in the 2015 Magic Origins set as an uncommon equipment card. It was designed to provide players with a reliable method for land ramp in colors that typically struggle to fetch lands, mechanically representing a blade that unearths resources from the ground as it strikes. The design centers on the 'Landfall' trigger, creating a consistent engine for aggressive decks looking to maintain momentum as the game progresses.
The Commander Masters version, featuring collector number 616, is a premium borderless reprint of the original card. This edition utilizes updated, high-fidelity artwork to appeal to collectors and Commander players who value aesthetic consistency across their decks. Like many cards within the Commander Masters release, this iteration was intended to improve card availability while offering a visually distinct alternative to the classic frame, and it has been well-regarded by players for its utility in the singleton format.
