Where it came from
The Wood Elves card was released as a DCI Promo in 1999, intended to encourage grassroots participation in organized Magic: The Gathering play. As a staple green creature card that allows a player to search their library for a forest, the Wood Elves provided a foundational utility for mana ramp strategies in various formats during the late 1990s.
This specific promotional version features updated artwork by the prolific fantasy illustrator Donato Giancola. Moving away from the original 1994 Alpha/Beta art, Giancola’s rendition emphasizes a more atmospheric, ethereal take on the elven archetype, a style that became highly regarded by collectors for its polished aesthetic and departure from the more rudimentary illustrations of the game's earliest sets.
