Where it came from
Gix's Command was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. The card depicts the sinister Phyrexian praetor Gix, a pivotal antagonist in the game's deep lore who orchestrated much of the conflict on the plane of Dominaria. Its inclusion in this set serves to highlight the mechanical corruption brought by the Phyrexians during the historical war between the brothers Urza and Mishra.
The card features distinct, stylized artwork commissioned to reflect the aesthetic shift towards Phyrexian influence, emphasizing biomechanical horror and dark, organic iconography. Designed to offer players versatile utility in game scenarios, the card was received as a strong thematic representation of Gix’s manipulative nature, with the promotional versions often sought after for their unique, frame-breaking art treatments that differentiate them from the standard set release.
