Where it came from
Temporary Truce was released in 1997 as part of the Portal expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically as an introductory product to bring new players into the game, featuring simplified mechanics and distinct, borderless-style artwork. The card itself represents a pacifist strategy, allowing players to pause combat, which fits the set's pedagogical goal of teaching players how to navigate game phases without the pressure of constant aggression.
The illustration was created by artist Val Mayerik, a veteran comic book illustrator known for his work on characters like Howard the Duck. Mayerik opted for a painterly, atmospheric style that diverges from the more rigid fantasy tropes of the time, aiming to evoke a sense of temporary respite rather than direct conflict. The card was received as a niche utility tool, valued primarily for its role in preventing early-game losses during the simplified, faster-paced matches encouraged by the Portal set.
