Provenance

Where it came from

Temporary Lockdown was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to return to the iconic plane of Dominaria, blending nostalgic themes with modern gameplay mechanics. The card serves as a board-clearing tool in the White color identity, intended to provide strategic control by exiling low-mana permanents from the battlefield.

The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a clean, ethereal aesthetic to represent the card’s restrictive magical effect. Steinbauer’s design aims to visualize the tension and sudden stasis inherent in the spell. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive adoption, particularly in the Pioneer and Modern formats, where its efficiency against aggressive deck archetypes made it a staple for control-oriented players.
