Where it came from
Tempt with Reflections was released in 2013 as part of the Commander 2013 set, a product line specifically engineered for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. The card was designed to incentivize group play, introducing the 'tempting offer' mechanic which allows an opponent to copy a spell in exchange for the player creating their own copy. This design ethos aligns with the social and political nature of multiplayer Commander, encouraging interactive board states where players must weigh the benefits of mutual gain against the risk of empowering an adversary.
The card features illustration by Terese Nielsen, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her distinct, painterly style. Nielsen’s work on this card depicts a surreal, ethereal landscape that captures the magical quality of duplication. Upon its release, the card was received as a fascinating, if high-risk, inclusion in Blue-aligned decks, recognized primarily for its ability to create explosive moments in mid-to-late game scenarios where the temptation to copy a powerful permanent becomes irresistible to table opponents.
