Provenance

Where it came from

The Tempting Licid was originally printed in the 1998 Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It belongs to the Licid creature cycle, a unique group of cards designed to switch between creature and enchantment types. Created during a period of experimentation within the game's mechanics, these cards were intended to introduce a fluid layer of interaction where players could reposition their permanents as either tactical threats or protective buffs depending on the state of the battlefield.

The art was provided by Dan Frazier, a seminal illustrator in the early years of the game. Frazier focused on the surreal and metamorphic quality of the Licid, capturing its parasitic and transformative nature. While the complexity of the rules surrounding the Licid cycle made them somewhat cumbersome for many players, they remain a notable curiosity for collectors of late-90s card design. Its inclusion in 'The List' is a retrospective nod to its distinctive role in the history of card mechanics.
