Where it came from
The Temur War Shaman was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set for Magic: The Gathering. It serves as a narrative piece within the Khans of Tarkir block, which centers on the time-traveling planeswalker Sarkhan Vol and his efforts to alter the history of his war-torn home plane, Tarkir. The card depicts a member of the Temur Frontier, a rugged, shamanistic clan that prizes survival and primal power in the frozen mountains.
The illustration was created by artist Tyler Jacobson, who was tasked with conveying the shaman's connection to the manifested spirits of the forest. The design reflects the visual identity of the Temur clan, utilizing heavy fur garments, tribal aesthetic markers, and an atmosphere of elemental magic. Like many promotional cards from this era, the piece was distributed through various organized play channels, becoming a recognizable element of the set's mid-range tactical cards due to its unique manifest ability.
