Where it came from
Temur War Shaman was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the frozen tundra of Tarkir, this card represents the Temur Frontier, a clan defined by its survivalist culture and affinity for elemental spirits. The set depicts an alternate timeline where the dragon lord Ugin was not killed, and the card's mechanics centered on the manifest ability, which allowed players to put creatures onto the battlefield face-down as colorless 2/2 creatures.
The artwork was created by illustrator Raymond Swanland, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his dynamic, high-energy style. His design for the Temur War Shaman emphasizes the shaman's connection to the primal forces of the wild, utilizing bold lighting and fluid, sweeping motion lines to capture the intensity of a spell being cast in the harsh, wintry environment of the plane.
