Thalakos Lowlands

Thalakos Lowlands was originally released as a common land card in the 1997 Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to represent the terrain of the Thalakos people, a tragic, phased-out civilization caught between planes of existence, fitting into the set's broader mechanical theme of phasing. The artwork, provided by artist NéNé Thomas, captures the ethereal and melancholic atmosphere of the Lowlands, emphasizing the fractured reality of the world the Thalakos inhabited.

This specific printing appears in the Battle Royale Box Set, which was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1999 as a preconstructed product designed to facilitate head-to-head play between two distinct decks. While the card retains the original Tempest-era illustration, its inclusion in the boxed set provided an accessible way for players to acquire specific thematic staples. It was well-received by the player base for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the cohesive aesthetic of the Tempest block's world-building.
