Thalakos Lowlands

Thalakos Lowlands was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a land card that enters the battlefield tapped and produces either blue or white mana, it belongs to a cycle of 'depleted' lands designed to provide color fixing in a limited environment while mitigating the power of dual lands. The card's aesthetic is rooted in the Rath plane, a jagged, artificial world created by the Phyrexian antagonist Volrath to facilitate the invasion of Dominaria.

The illustration was created by artist Jeff Miracola, who captured the haunting, alien topography of the Thalakos territory. The design reflects the broader artistic direction of the Tempest block, which emphasized a darker, more industrial-fantasy tone compared to earlier sets. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for multicolored decks, though it has since become a nostalgic touchstone for players who collected during the late 1990s.
