Where it came from
The Book of Exalted Deeds was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first full crossover between the collectible card game and the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop franchise. This specific promotional version, designated as collector number 4s, was issued as a foil showcase card featuring a distinct, stylized art treatment designed to evoke the aesthetic of an ancient, enchanted tome. The card's mechanics are centered on the iconic artifact from D&D lore, which traditionally serves as a powerful instrument of good and divine protection within that universe.
The card was illustrated by David Palumbo, a renowned fantasy artist who employed a dramatic, illuminated style to distinguish the promotional print from standard set variants. Its design philosophy focused on high-fantasy iconography, intended to appeal to both long-time Dungeons & Dragons players and established Magic collectors. Upon release, the card saw significant competitive play in various digital and tabletop formats, solidifying its reputation as a centerpiece for white-aligned decks that focus on life-gain strategies and board state preservation.
