Where it came from
The Book of Exalted Deeds was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game integrated the lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons. This specific promo version, numbered 4a, was released as a 'prerelease' card, featuring a distinct holofoil stamp and alternate frame treatment that distinguishes it from the standard set version.
The card was designed to mirror the powerful Dungeons & Dragons artifact of the same name, which is historically associated with celestial beings and forces of good. Illustrating the artifact fell to artist Donato Giancola, who utilized a refined, classical aesthetic intended to evoke the feeling of a legendary, ancient religious text. Upon release, the card became a focal point of discussion within the competitive community due to its unique ability to grant a player protection from losing the game, leading to significant strategic shifts in various formats.
