Where it came from
The Book of Exalted Deeds was introduced as a mythic rare card in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This set marked a significant milestone for the game, as it was the first time the core Magic trading card game mechanics were integrated into a dedicated Dungeons & Dragons crossover expansion. The card is based on a legendary D&D sourcebook of the same name, representing a powerful artifact of absolute good within the game's lore.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who sought to capture the ethereal, radiant nature of the legendary tome through a high-fantasy aesthetic. Within the competitive ecosystem, the card gained immediate notoriety for its rules text, which allows players to create an emblem that prevents them from losing the game as long as they control an Angel. This mechanic made it a staple of control strategies and a frequent subject of discussion regarding game balance in the Standard and Historic formats.
