Where it came from
The Deck of Many Things, appearing as card 241s in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion for Magic: The Gathering, was released in July 2021. This set marked the first time the game featured a full crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying system, aiming to integrate iconic artifacts and mechanics from the RPG into Magic's trading card format.
The card was illustrated by Axel Sauerwald, who leaned into the surreal and chaotic reputation the item holds within Dungeons & Dragons lore. Designed to function as an artifact that provides powerful, unpredictable effects, the card's visual aesthetic captures the shimmering, mystical nature of the deck. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of both games for its faithful translation of the tabletop item's volatile ability to drastically alter a game state.
