The Hippodrome

The Hippodrome was released in 2016 as part of the Planechase Anthology, a comprehensive collection designed to revive and consolidate the Planechase format for Magic: The Gathering. This card represents the plane of Segovia, a world noted for its minuscule scale, where creatures and structures are tiny by standard multiverse measures. The design was intended to capture the chaotic, spectator-focused atmosphere of a grand arena, translating the setting's peculiar physics into a gameplay environment that encourages aggressive combat.

The artwork, illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, leans into the cinematic scale of the arena to emphasize the plane's unique narrative hook. By focusing on the towering yet miniaturized perspective of the spectators and combatants, the design successfully bridges the gap between the game's mechanics and its lore. It was received by players as a flavorful addition that highlighted the creative breadth of the Planeswalker setting, serving as a functional tool for multiplayer formats while grounding the concept of Segovia for established fans.
