Provenance

Where it came from

The Hive is an artifact card featured in the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering, released in 1994. It was originally part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, representing the game's early efforts to establish a mechanical identity where colorless artifacts provided utility outside of traditional color boundaries. This card was designed to allow players to create token creatures, a mechanic that has since become a staple of the game but was quite distinct in its early implementation.

The illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose distinctive style is synonymous with the iconic artifacts of the game's formative years. Frazier’s approach to the design was meant to evoke a sense of organic, slightly unsettling nature through the depiction of a buzzing, insectoid construct. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, valued primarily for its ability to generate recurring creature threats in a format where creature removal was less efficient than it is today.
