Where it came from
The Magic Mirror was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set, a Magic: The Gathering expansion deeply inspired by Arthurian legend and classic European fairy tales. Designed to mechanically represent the iconic cursed or enchanted mirror found in folklore, the card functions as an artifact that grows in power as players cast more instants and sorceries, embodying the concept of accumulating knowledge or dark magic over time.
The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a haunting, atmospheric style to capture the mirror’s ethereal and ominous nature. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its unique resource-gathering mechanic, which encouraged specific deck-building strategies, solidifying its place as a distinctive representative of the set's high-fantasy, storybook aesthetic.
