Where it came from
The Monumental Facade was released as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for Magic: The Gathering in early 2023. As a land card with a distinct role in the set's mechanics, it was designed to support the proliferate keyword, which serves as a thematic cornerstone for the set's focus on the spread of the Phyrexians' influence across the multiverse. The card reflects the set's harsh, biomechanical aesthetic, centering on the iconography of the Phyrexians' architecture.
The illustrative direction for the set was led by the Wizards of the Coast art team, who aimed to evoke a feeling of dread and clinical perfectionism characteristic of the New Phyrexian faction. This specific promo version utilizes a specialized border treatment to distinguish it from the standard card frame found in booster packs. It was well received by players who favor artifact-heavy strategies and those who enjoy the deep, dark science-fiction lore that has defined this long-running chapter of the game's narrative.
