Where it came from
The Monumental Facade was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Within the game's lore, the card represents the architectural grandeur and cold, metallic perfection of the New Phyrexian machine world, serving as a utility land that supports the set's central 'proliferate' mechanic, which manipulates counter-based growth across the battlefield.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by illustrator Joseph Meehan, who emphasized the stark, alien geometry characteristic of the Phyrexian aesthetic. The design reflects the visual transition of the Magic multiverse into a state of total assimilation, utilizing a monochromatic, industrial color palette to convey the oppressive and clinical nature of the faction's influence over their conquered plane.
