Where it came from
The Royal Scions card was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Throne of Eldraine. The set drew heavily on Arthurian legend and classic fairy tales, reimagining these archetypes within the game's multiverse. As a Planeswalker card, it was designed to represent the twins Rowan and Will Kenrith, who serve as pivotal figures in the Eldraine narrative, showcasing their burgeoning magical abilities and their close sibling bond.
The illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is renowned for her work on high-fantasy imagery. Her design aimed to capture the duality of the characters, balancing their regal stature with the youthful vulnerability of their story arc. Upon its release, the card was widely discussed by players for its efficient mana cost and its role as a versatile utility piece in competitive formats, ultimately becoming a staple representative of the set's thematic and mechanical direction.
