Where it came from
The Royal Scions was first released as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion in 2019, specifically designed to showcase the twin planeswalkers Rowan and Will Kenrith. As the first multi-colored planeswalker card featuring two distinct characters on a single card frame, it served as a narrative centerpiece for the set's fairy-tale inspired theme. The design aimed to represent the collaborative, volatile dynamic between the siblings, mechanically bridging their individual elemental affinities for lightning and ice.
The card’s artwork was rendered by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator in the field of fantasy gaming known for her emotive and detailed character portraits. Her composition was specifically intended to capture the youthful intensity of the twins while maintaining a cohesive visual style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of Eldraine. Upon release, it was received as a versatile tool in competitive formats, appreciated by players for its efficient mana cost and ability to cycle through deck resources while protecting itself.
