Where it came from
The Seedcore was released as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for Magic: The Gathering in early 2023. As a legendary land card, it represents the corrupted, metallic ecology of the plane of New Phyrexia. The set's narrative centers on the Phyrexian invasion of the multiverse, and the card's design serves both a mechanical function as a land that taps for mana and a thematic role by showcasing the nightmarish, biomechanical fusion central to the set's aesthetic.
The illustration for this specific promotional version was created by artist Alayna Danner. She was tasked with capturing the unsettling beauty of the Phyrexian landscape, utilizing a distinct color palette and intricate details that emphasize the grafting of organic life onto industrial, cold structures. This version, identified by the collector number 259s, features the specialized Ichor showcase frame, a stylistic choice intended to evoke the fluid, transformative nature of the Phyrexians that was widely praised by players for its cohesion with the set's darker, body-horror-inspired visual identity.
