Where it came from
The Temporal Anchor was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set, The Brothers' War. This set served as a narrative return to the franchise's foundational conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra, drawing heavily on the aesthetic of 1980s industrial fantasy and the original Antiquities expansion. The card was designed to mechanically represent the manipulation of time and artifacts, echoing the central theme of the set's technological progression and the catastrophic war that reshaped the multiverse.
The art was created by illustrator Olena Richards, who focused on a celestial, clockwork-inspired aesthetic to emphasize the card's function as a stabilizing force in the timeline. Within the context of the Brothers' War promos, the piece was produced as a borderless card variant to showcase the intricate, heavy-metal-inspired machinery typical of the setting. It was received by players as a functional staple for artifact-centric decks, valued both for its gameplay utility in accelerating resources and its thematic visual alignment with the set's darker, mechanical motifs.
