Where it came from
The Temporal Anchor was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set explores the pivotal conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, a foundational lore event in the game's history. The card depicts a piece of Thran technology, reflecting the advanced, ancient machinery that serves as a central plot device throughout the narrative.
The illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, who utilized a clean, intricate aesthetic to capture the mechanical complexity of the artifact. His design choices emphasize the cold, imposing nature of the anchor, focusing on the heavy industrial textures that define the aesthetic of the Brothers' War era. It was received as a functional addition to the set, highlighting the theme of resource manipulation and timeline stabilization inherent to the lore.
