Where it came from
Their Number Is Legion was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark sci-fi aesthetic of the Warhammer universe into the mechanics of a collectible card game. The card represents the Necrons, an ancient race of metallic, undead-like automatons seeking to reclaim their former galactic empire.
The card’s design reflects the Necron theme of resilience and reanimation, featuring artwork that emphasizes the cold, mechanical horror of the faction. It was crafted to fit seamlessly into the Necron Dynasties deck, which focuses on artifacts and graveyard interaction. The design team aimed to balance the lore-heavy atmosphere of the 41st millennium with the specific gameplay constraints of the Commander format, ensuring that the card remains a functional piece of synergy for players rather than just a narrative inclusion.
